For every book that's been made into a film, there are thousands just waiting in literature limbo for someone to give them some cinematic love. There are some good suggestions made here. I have always thought that
A Confederacy of Dunces would make an excellent film and I heard somewhere that John Candy was considering making the film and casting himself as Ignatius. I also think
Oryx and Crake would translate well to the screen.
Oh, I wholeheartedly agree about 'Oryx and Crake'.
ReplyDeleteI loved that novel.
A film, well done, of that novel would certainly bring me back to the movie theatre after many years.
I hear Atwood's novel Alias Graceis being made into a film by Sarah Polley.
ReplyDeleteI just recently read a review of A Confederacy of Dunces, (having never read the book itself) and the writer HATED IT....??!!

So what is it about the book that you like well enough for a film?

I read Confederacy Of Dunces many years ago and perhaps, as the reviewer states, only on reflection "is it funny as hell, just like real life." Upon reflection I remember Ignatius being forced by circumstances to work as a pirate costumed hot dog vendor. It was hilarious.
ReplyDeleteIf by some miracle Ignatius had produced a male child he might have called him something pretentious, Charles Pascal for instance. I suspect that the reviewer, who refers to his own 3 year old son as Charles Pascal, might have his own reasons for disliking the novel.
