Twenty-three years ago today Marc Lepine opened fire at Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique, killing 14 women before killing himself. Why? Because they were women.
And yet, there are still people who don't see that we have a long way to go to achieve gender equality in this country as well as the rest of the world, and that there are still people unwilling to identify themselves as feminist. It is hornswoggling! Lepine's irrational hatred of women was right out in the open, a blatant, sick example; a lot of it remains so well hidden that the perpetrators of it don't even realize their attitudes are chauvinistic.
I was living in Montreal near the University and when I came home I was wondering why there were so many sirens! And yet things never seem to change...
