The gems that Bob Dylan discarded

Bob Dylan has been remarkably prolific in the 48 years since his first album was released, and along the way some great songs have been 'lost’. As the singer prepares for his only UK date this year, Clinton Heylin picks 25 of his finest unheard tracks.

10 memorable Hunter S. Thompson quotes

Hunter S. Thompson, the father of creative non-fiction, is an iconic journalist, writer, athlete, gun enthusiast, and all-around reckless guy who saw the world in a way few of us do (or admit). In honour of his genius, here are some of his most memorable quotes:

  • “Nixon had the unique ability to make his enemies seem honorable, and we developed a keen sense of fraternity. Some of my best friends have hated Nixon all their lives. My mother hates Nixon, my son hates Nixon, I hate Nixon, and this hatred has brought us together.”—1994, in a Rolling Stone interview.

Roses That Lack Bugs, but Also Perfume

Black spot is the bane of my existence. By the end of summer my roses have succumbed despite my most earnest efforts. This year many pesticides have been banned (a good thing) and the effectiveness of the less toxic concoctions remains to be seen. Would I sacrifice scent to have beautiful roses until autumn? Maybe.

Smoked

The "Smoked" series, along with Brooklyn's renowned fine art glass pipe gallery Easy Street, are helping to bring respect to a medium formerly considered mere utility. From quirky ice cream cones to complex pieces, the book shares the thoughtful side of pipe blowing.

Cool Hunting

Münchausen by Internet

Years ago when I was a social worker I ran across two cases of Münchausen syndrome by proxy where parents caused harm to their children in order to get attention.
Apparently the syndrome continues to flourish in the internet age.
Reports of users who deceive Internet forum participants by portraying themselves as gravely ill or as victims of violence first appeared in the 1990s due to the relative newness of Internet communications. The pattern was identified in 1998 by psychiatrist Marc Feldman, who created the term "Münchausen by Internet" in 2000.

Jaw-dropping hospital bill from Canada

Holy Kaw was pleasantly surprised by his brush with Canadian health care.

This is $9,000 less than what I expected. I can buy eighteen iPads with the money I saved! And if I was a Canadian citizen, I would have paid nothing. The next time I have chest pains, I will take a few aspirins and fly to Canada, eh? I feel like including a tip in my payment.

We're gonna move

This video hit the right buttons. I've always liked Louden Wainwright - he's so clever - and I fear moving because of Mr. Nag's hoarding ways.

It was hotter than Hades today but Mr. Nag dragged some furniture up from the basement and found a cool corner near the fountain for us to have our espresso and croissants.

The intent behind Vulgar Army is to identify and criticise themes in the use of the octopus as a metaphor in propaganda and political cartoons, as well as identify its relation to popular culture.

Cat travels from Stoney Creek to Garden City under car hood

Poor little thing is only 6 weeks old! They thought she was black but she was just covered in oil (they called her BP at first). When they cleaned her up they found a pretty white kitty.

Don't link to the Globe and Mail unless you want to be accused of copyright infringement

Does anyone know why Blogger would send me this take down message about a Globe and Mail link I posted 3 years ago? I attributed the link and it was from a frickin' newspaper.
Blogger has been notified, according to the terms of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), that certain content in your blog is alleged to infringe upon the copyrights of others. As a result, we have reset the post(s) to "draft" status. (If we did not do so, we would be subject to a claim of copyright infringement, regardless of its merits. The URL(s) of the allegedly infringing post(s) may be found at the end of this message.) This means your post - and any images, links or other content - is not gone. You may edit the post to remove the offending content and republish, at which point the post in question will be visible to your readers again.

As I Lay Dying

A re-imagined interpretation of William Faulkner's 1930 novel As I Lay Dying. The novel centers around the death of Addie Bundren, and her family's quest to honor her wish to be buried in her hometown. Each chapter is a stream-of-consciousness narrative that switches from fifteen different characters over the course of ninety-six chapters.
