The Cave Canem Project at Pompeii

"An admirable new project called Cave Canem (Cave Canem means “beware of the dog” in Latin and the phrase is famous because it is inscribed on a mosaic found in the doorway of a home in Pompeii) aims to find proper homes for the stray dogs of Pompeii. To this end, they’ve put up a website at which you can browse the dogs that are in search of owners and download the paperwork necessary for adoption. They come with charming ancient Roman names like Polidia and Vesonius; they’re chock-full of knowledge about Pompeii as they’ve been on many a guided tour; and they are healthy, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered."

  2. I was also a Latin scholar although I don't have much opportunity to use it these days. And yes I did see the Google Street view thingy. I have wanted to visit Pompeii since reading about the excavation when I was a little Nag; the horror fascinated me. I've been to Italy a number of times but have never been able to fit it in. Italian strays look different from our strays. There were a lot of similar largish black and white dogs in Rome.
