Atheist Ireland opposes the law and has published a list of 25 blasphemous quotes, which have previously been published by or uttered by or attributed to Jesus Christ, Muhammad, Mark Twain, Tom Lehrer, Randy Newman, James Kirkup, Monty Python, Rev Ian Paisley, Conor Cruise O’Brien, Frank Zappa, Salman Rushdie, Bjork, Amanda Donohoe, George Carlin, Paul Woodfull, Jerry Springer the Opera, Tim Minchin, Richard Dawkins, Pope Benedict XVI, Christopher Hitchens, PZ Myers, Ian O’Doherty, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor and Dermot Ahern.

I've long puzzled over the discrepancy between freedom of speech and blasphemy laws.
ReplyDeleteMost religions regard the proseltitising of another religion to be blasphemous.
Yet this new Irish law seeks to protect multiple religions.
So if an Imam speaks out against Christianity, he is ptotected by free-speech laws, and in breach of blasphemy laws. If a priest preaches against praying to graven images, does he blaspheme against
Hindus, and against Shinto, and how many others?
Obviously the Irish legislature will find this law to be absolutely unworkable.
Not to mention stupid.
New laws just make more criminals.
