Seen at John Gushue . . . Dot Dot Dot
The first rock concert I ever went to was in Ottawa and featured the McCoys, ? and the Mysterians (96 Tears), Shadows of Knight (Gloria) and a couple more bands that I can't remember and Google has failed me, perhaps because this search is prehistoric. The McCoys were the draw for me though - I was smitten. Great concert, I came close to swooning when they sang "Sloopy let your hair down girl, let it hang down on me". Here is a degraded polaroid of me from the time (wanting to let my hair down on Rick Derringer):
Oooo, Hot hippie chick. ;o) First honest to goodness, multiple groups "rock" concert... Hot Tuna, Humble Pie, and Mountain, at the Philly Spectrum. First multi-act show, Peter, Paul, & Mary, plus a couple groups I forget, at a coffee house in Springfield, MA, around 195mumble.
Look! real honest to goodness Go-Go girls!!!! And a boy with a beatle haircut! Wow!!!! And the dancing! I'll guess, without googling, 1963/4? Oh dammit... googletime...
1965!!!!! Zowie, Nag!
Whatever are all those people doing? is it the frug? (because in the sixties every variation of awkward gyration had a name for itself). I was terminally embarrassed and shy because I couldn't dance. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, and the evidence of youtube, I see I need not have worried: -Nobody else could dance either. Except you, I bet you could. Patchouli oil, I'll bet you had some.... and a cheesecloth shirt with little mirrors sewn into it...
Yes I had the total look and kept it until I got a serious job in the late 70's when I cut my hair and donned shoulder pads. The dancing, typical of the 60s is mostly freeform but I recognize the jerk, the monkey, a little bit of pony and a brief glimpse of the batusi. Groovy!
Hey Dawn you were definitely there. What was the name of that DJ who lived in our apartment building? Nelson something? Were the Grassroots there or not?

Girls don't look sweet like that any more, the way you look in that picture.
ReplyDeleteI don't look that sweet any more either.
ReplyDeleteBut your sweetness has matured... not soured.
ReplyDeleteQuite right, Bruce. Like fine wine!

ReplyDeleteHi Nag I was at that concert with you. I remember it well. I was wearing red jeans. I think Mash Macan was also there singing And As Years Go By. Dawn

ReplyDeleteI don't think Grassroots were there. I think that group came out several years later. I can't remember the name of the DJ. Dawn
ReplyDeleteVery Joan Baez.
ReplyDeletew
I've been told that before. I also played guitar and sang folk songs in a high pitched voice.
ReplyDeleteNag, you are so damn cute!
ReplyDeleteHey Diane, haven't heard from you in awhile! I'm not so cute now but wasn't too ghastly back in the day.
ReplyDeleteLove that photo of you!
ReplyDeleteMy first ever concert was when I was ten and got to see The Who, Herman's Hermits and the Blues Magoos play in Winnipeg.
The Who was the warm-up act. Go figure.
That was an interesting lineup - something for everyone. Which group did you like best?
ReplyDeleteBeing ten, I was there to see Herman's Hermits, but I'll never forget The Who. Nor the Blues Magoos wearing electric suits.
ReplyDeleteI was about 15 when Herman's Hermits were big. I liked them; so did my nana.
