Le Figaro has some great photos of Paris before and after Haussmann, the uber city planner, rebuilt the city. Napoleon III wanted parks and boulevards that were wide enough to prevent them from being barricaded by rebels during periods of unrest. Haussmann designed the Paris we know today. In the process many of the poor were moved from the newly gentrified city centre to the periphery of Paris.
