Hannah the amazing little hummingbird

Mr. Nag brought home the story of the amazing little Selasphorus hummingbird who ended up in Niagara Falls, far from home, and became a star. More than 500 people came to visit this amazing little bird in her back yard habitat. An expert hummingbird bander (this is an occupation?) was able to capture her and band her without any trauma. As the weather became colder the family who "adopted " her put up a Scotch Pine tree where she could take shelter and a sparrow became her roommate there. Many people followed her story and we had planned to visit her but, sadly, she didn't survive the bitterly cold weather and died just before Christmas.

Snow Emergency
Two days ago Nag Jr. emailed that it was snowing in Venice. Today my favourite Paris blogs are reporting that a sprinkling of 2 inches of the white stuff has created chaos in the City of Lights (parks are closed because walkways have been rendered slippery, etc.) We Canadians are mildly amused.

Bag of Rags
Katie is really old for a Cavalier and she can mostly be found perched on the back of the sofa like this or in her basket at my feet when I'm at the computer. She's not interested in much but still loves her food - she almost took my finger off the other day when I offered her a bit of bagel. Nag Jr. says smell and taste are the only senses she has left - she's half blind from cataracts and I suspect her hearing is shot as well (she doesn't listen- does that mean she can't hear?) Her decline was fairly rapid. First she was unable to jump into bed with us, then she couldn't get onto the sofa, now she's having trouble with stairs - her back end gives out on the way down and she tumbles the rest of the way (loudly and disturbingly, usually in the middle of the night). These dogs are frisky pups one day and old bags of rags the next and the end result is always a broken heart.

Bon Voyage, Jake!
The older of the little Nags is headed off to Italy for two weeks. This is his first time travelling alone and his first trip to Europe so we worry and tried to micromanage the whole thing (packing rolls of toilet paper, trying to sneak all sorts of "essentials into his suitcase). Seeing the little Nag off brought back a lot of memories of travelling pre-internet when Europe was so much farther away. Mr. Nag and I won't rest easy until we receive our first email from Bella Italia.

Great New Job
I'm excited about my new job as office manager of Willowbank Heritage Estate and School of Restoration Arts in Queenston (link below). This magnificent building, considered one of the finest remaining examples of Colonial architecture in North America, and its surrounding grounds were rescued from development by Laura Dodson and a group of heritage advocates. For her work on this project Laura was appointed to the Order of Canada. She is a truly amazing woman whose quiet, calm demeanor belies a will of steel. Willowbank has been named a National Historic Site. The plan is to add courses every year, and eventually have a full Heritage Restoration Programme and accreditation in place.
