Gordon Parks and Ralph Ellison in Harlem

Gordon Parks was a photographer and filmmaker best known for his humanizing photo-essays for Life magazine. Ralph Ellison authored the acclaimed and debated novel Invisible Man . These two artists were friends who shared a vision of racial injustices and a belief in the communicative power of photography, An exhibition at The Art Institute Of Chicago reunites for the first time the surviving photographs and texts intended for two of their collaborations, one in 1948 and another in 1952. It includes never-before-seen photographs by Parks from the collections of the Art Institute and the Gordon Parks Foundation and unpublished manuscripts by Ellison.
