Cry Baby: The Invention of the Wah-Wah Pedal

In the 1960s, the wah became “psychedelia’s non-psychotropic aid,” bridging the gap between music and the human voice. How did it become such an iconic fixture in popular culture?
The first wah pedal was created entirely by accident by Brad Plunkett at Warwick Electronics Inc./Thomas Organ Company in November 1966. It came about as a result of the redesign of the Vox Super Beatle guitar amplifier. Plunkett designed a circuit that could change the frequency of notes by simply rotating a potentiometer. Then, something unexpected happened.
