Mask Against Mask

San Francisco based artist Janice Suhji is currently working on a project called Máscara Contra Máscara (Mask Against Mask). From hijabs, wedding veils, to the recent beating of Pussy Riot in Sochi, Russia, masks have played a significant role in the history of women. Suhji photographs women in homemade Luchador masks and feminine-looking dresses. In Mexico Lucha Libre wrestling masks are tools of intimidation but Suhji sees them as tools of empowerment for women and uses them to commemorate every woman who is fighting the unseen fight, taking her stand as a woman in this world. Each final image is a composite of minimum twelve photographs.
