Ancient Underwater City Becomes Major Tourist Attraction

In 1959 the Chinese government flooded 27 towns, 1,377 villages, and almost 50,000 acres of farmland to create a hydroelectric plant.  290,000 people were displaced by the project.

Today the ancient Lion City remains well preserved at a depth of 26-40m beneath the water's surface. The site has also become a popular dive destination for tourists who want to see what life in China was like in the Han Dynasty.
