RIP Nigel, The Gannet With A Concrete Fetish

Twenty years ago, conservationists placed concrete birds on Mana Island, NZ to attract gannets. But it wasn't until 2015 that a bird finally showed up. Nigel the romantic gannet spent years courting an unresponsive concrete mate. I'm sad to report Nigel has been found dead next to his stone cold partner. Here he is in 2016:



Three other gannets had recently come to the island but apparently wanted nothing to do with Nigel, likely because they thought he was a weirdo.
