The False Advertising Of 19th-Century Pharmaceutical Trade Cards

Small cards, known as trade cards, were distributed by merchants to their customers in the late1800s to promote their products. Some of the prettiest were from the pharmaceutical industry.





William H. Helfand collected these ads for ailments, and donated his collection to the New York Academy of Medicine’s (NYAM) Library between 1986 and 1992. Now the complete collection is publicly available in the NYAM’s recently launched website for digital collections and exhibits.
