Jonathan Livingston Crab, The 40-Year-Old Hermit Crab


Carol Ann Ormes purchased her hermit crab, Jonathan Livingston Crab, in the summer of 1976 and he is still going strong in 2016 which may be a longevity record for a hermit crab in captivity. He recently celebrated his 40th anniversary with a lobster tail (he got the exoskeleton, she ate the meat). Ormes attributes her pet's long life to exercise outside his tank.

  1. I remember the Hermit Crab craze in the 70s. There was a store at the my local mall that sold nothing but Hermit Crabs, and Hermit Crab accessories.

  2. Didn't he go out with a Karen Thomas Crab, from Dolgellau...in the 70's (in Dolgellau)?
