Judging a book through its cover

In the latest issue of Nature Communications,  MIT researchers describe a prototype of an imaging system which they tested on a stack of papers, each with one letter printed on it. The system was able to correctly identify the letters on the top nine sheets. It could be used on fragile antique books that could be damaged if handled, or on other layered materials.
