The Birth Of The Bikini

On this day in 1946 the bikini bathing suit was created by Louis Réard, a French automotive engineer who was running his mother's lingerie business. Two piece swimsuits had been available for at least since the 1930s, but Réard's bikini was controversial because for the first time the wearer's navel was exposed.
