BBC's London Calling Series Is a Great Way to Discover The City

The series was filmed before the London Olympics. It begins with rough edged Shoreditch in East London with its "pubs, clubs, bars and drugs".

Other episodes cover Whitechapel, one time home of Jack the Ripper, Hampstead with its lovely heath, vibrant Peckham, multicultural Dalston, Edgware Road with its middle eastern restaurants and Smithfield, an island of working-class tradition slowly sinking in a sea of gentrification.
