Bathing Suit Cleans Polluted Water as You Swim

This bathing suit won first prize at the 2015 Reshape Wearable Technology Competition.

The 3D-printed Sponge Suit was created by a group of engineers led by electrical engineering professor Mihri Ozkan and assisted by the design firm Eray Carbajo. The environmentally friendly bikini is made of flexible, carbon-based filler materials that function like a sponge, absorbing pollutants from water as you swim.

Alas it is just a prototype at the moment, but the makers are planning mass production and it should be available for purchase soon. They’re also planning to apply the same technology to other types of swimsuits and swimming caps.
