I never paid too much attention to the opening credits of Orange is the New Black. 52 women’s faces flash in quick succession, juxtaposed with shots of Litchfield Correctional Facility.
I assumed they were closeups of cast members but they aren't. They are photos of real-life convicted criminals.
Show creator Jenji Kohan wanted to let viewers know right away that Orange is the New Black isn’t just a show about Taylor Schilling’s character Piper Chapman. But the real Piper Chapman who wrote the book on which the show is based and who did jail time is one of those 52 women (see picture below)
