Did you think sushi arrived in the US in the 1960s along with far eastern religions and manga? You'd be wrong. Japanese restaurants were popular in the late 19th century and sushi appeared in North Dakota in 1905!
In the first two decades of the 20th century, Americans enjoyed Japanese food so much that labor unions and American restaurant owners conspired to run the Japanese out of business and out of the country.
