Yukitsuri: Japanese Snow Suspenders

During the winter months, many Japanese gardeners construct conical structures called Yukitsuri to protect the branches of trees and shrubs from the weight of snow. Bamboo poles are erected near the trunk of the tree and ropes are lowered from the top of the pole to be attached to the branches. The ropes prevent the branches from sagging and breaking under the weight of accumulated snow. As many as 800 ropes can be used on a single tree.
