World's Largest Buddhist Settlement

Sertar in the Larung Gar Valley in China is home to the world's largest Buddhist settlement. This colourful settlement began  in the 1980s and is now a haven for over 40,000 monks and nuns who travel to the Larung Gar Buddhist Academy to study Tibetan Buddhism.

Students from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia travel to Sertar by coach for a gruelling 20 hours and live in very basic conditions. There are no tvs but iPhones are allowed.
