I think these guidelines are overly cautious. My kids used to get upset when I tried to feed them food that was past its best before date but I managed to sneak it by them plenty of times and they're still alive.
Agreed, I would say that you can at least double, if not triple, those timelines.On a related note, I highly recommend the book "American Wasteland" by Jonathan Bloom if you are interested in the subject of food waste.
