Hefner wanted the Bunnies to look like high priced whores, but not be, or get paid, like them. He was counting on the allure of possibly meeting/marrying, a rich playboy, to keep them in line.
I'll bet more than a few of them married guys with a chunk of change. For a while these large breasted waitresses were considered real catches.
"unkept tail"? No one wants a bunny with an unkempt tail, all full of burrs and dingleberries and whatnot, but "unkept"? =removed? lost?
